CHAPTER SIX

Wade’s motto for life was pretty simple. When in doubt, have a beer with the guys. Since doubt was pretty much his constant companion lately, that motto certainly applied now.

For the past few days, he’d been working his fingers to the bone out at Coach’s. In his downtime, he’d focused on his music. Gray had left him with a couple of really good songs, ones he actually thought fit his style while adding a new edge. They’d even spurred Wade to write like a fiend after Gray and his wife had gone back to California, and that hadn’t happened in too long to remember.

Though that probably had as much to do with Wade’s current source of inspiration as anything else. A source he’d be losing in a few days, unless he figured out one hell of a hat trick to keep her in his life.

But right now, he was going to talk and laugh and drink. Maybe even shoot some pool if the spirit moved him.

Sunday night at Pitchers meant no live band and an almost empty dance floor. Tinny music flowed out of the ancient jukebox and the crowd was much more low-key. As soon as Wade walked in, he saw Joel, Oakley, Carter Shaw, the town cop, and Jackson Brady—the championship team’s star running back before he was suspended senior year for an “unfortunate indiscretion” as Wade’s ma referred to it—at a large table in back. AJ and Randi were also in residence, though they sat at another table and appeared deep in conversation.

He didn’t want to get deep into anything tonight but Charlene.

Smile in place, Wade headed over to the guys’ table and slapped hands. He chose a seat at one end and settled in, listening with amusement as Joel and Oakley engaged in what he suspected was their usual trash talk.

Damn, he’d missed these guys. All of them.

Tucker Riley, an amazing NFL quarterback who was on a team that was surely Super Bowl-bound this year, came in a few minutes later and grabbed the seat between Wade and Jackson.

After a bit of small talk, Tucker pointed to the beer in front of them. “What’s on tap?”

Jackson held up his glass. “It’s Quinn, Tuck. What do you think is on tap?”

They laughed as they said “Bud” in unison.

Sadie came over with a fresh pitcher and a cold glass for Tucker. Sadie was only a bit older than them and had been the subject of more than a few teenage fantasies for the guys at the table. She’d been homecoming queen her senior year, which had only helped fuel the boys’ hormone-ruled imaginations for most of their high school years. Sadie’s family had run Pitchers for decades. “This one’s on the house. It’s damn good to see y’all in Quinn again. This town has been hurting for hot guys ever since you all left.”

Oakley clutched his heart, pretending to take offense at her joke as Joel said, “Hey, take it easy there. A few of us at this table have been here all along.
